Congressman Bob Etheridge: Stop the Violence and Answer the Question

Just over a year ago, the United States Department of Homeland Security issued a report that warned citizens to be mindful of the violent, racist right-wing extremists that would soon be emerging from the woodwork. That’s Janet Napolitano for you. “The system worked” when a terrorist attempted to set off a bomb in his panties, but by George, watch out for those veterans — they know how to use guns!

Perhaps it would have been more prudent to issue requests that anyone with a conservative point of view kindly keep their mouth shut. Last week, an SEIU (Service Employees International Union) memberattacked a man at a Tea Party protest for having the audacity to try and protect his wife, as the lunatic was about to push her. I can guarantee you that that guy wasn’t a Republican. SEIU doesn’t accept them redneck Republicans.

On Monday a video went viral, thanks to Mike Flynn at Big Government, who posted the anonymous video on the site. About a minute in length, the video shows North Carolina Representative Bob Etheridge assaulting some young men who approached the Congressman to ask him if he supported the Obama agenda.

I’m Not Controlled by a Dingell

The Democrats have been doing a victory lap this week over their defeat of the Republicans in the battle for health care reform.  So weird, I thought the parties were supposed to work together, not duke it out until the bitter end. But I guess all things are fair in love and war, and politics is a bit (or a lot) of both. So a battle it was.

Have I mentioned that the Democrats passed the bill without the majority support of their constituents?  Or that not a single Republican voted for it? Or that they resorted to deceitful trickery in the worst ends-justifying-the-means scheme I’ve ever personally witnessed?  That’s bipartisanship at it’s best, all right.

But the funny thing about facts — they’re stubborn things.  President Obama can say “this bill will reduce the deficit” until the unicorns come home, but it won’t make it any less untrue.  The bill is full of twice counted money, doesn’t include the thousands and thousands of government employees that will need to be hired to enforce the darn thing, and it assumes that revenue will continue to increase in the worst economy in a generation just as a massive health care tax is levied upon employers.

The mostly glaringly obvious discrepency is the fact that it includes 10 years of revenue, but only six years of pay outs.  What happens in 2020? Do we only get health care in years ending 4-9? So many questions, never any answers.

Congressman John Dingell (D-NY) was on a radio show in Chicago this week, and host Paul Smith asked him why the coverage wouldn’t be implemented until 2014. You know, in light of the urgency with which it was forced upon us unwilling tax-payers.

The telling response (emphasis mine):

“We’re not ready to be doing it. This has been going on for years…The harsh fact of the matter is when you’re passing legislation that will cover 300 million American people in different ways, it takes a long time to do the necessary administrative steps that have to be taken to put the legislation together to control the people.”

Not sure about the rest of you, but I don’t relish the idea of being controlled. Seriously. Ask my husband. Or my dad. I believe his exact words to my new husband at our wedding were, “She’s yours now!”

One of my favorite movie lines ever is from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, when Toula’s mom is explaining to her why being the head of the house isn’t everything: “The man is the head, but the woman is the neck. And she can turn the head any way she wants.”

Hmm. Maybe I shouldn’t admit that on a blog that feeds into my hubby’s RSS feeder. Oh well, it’s not like it’s a humongous secret. But my point is that I don’t like other people trying to control me. I don’t want them limiting my choices on what kind of food to buy, where to send my kids to school, or whether or not I need a certain kind of health insurance.

Rep. Dingell went on to say:

“Our Republicans have spent a long time not participating, not helping, carping and delaying.”

I don’t know about you, but that makes me proud to be a Republican. They won’t be able to blame us one bit when this ship goes down in flames. And for the record, Dingell-berry, Republicans were shut out of the entire process, aside from a one day *Health Summit* in which the GOP pretty much shredded the bill and wiped the Liberals off the floor with it.

Which reminds me — I need to write another love letter, uh, I mean letter of support to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI). He broke down the financial impact so well that President Obama looked absolutely confused. As in, “Huh. That actually made sense. But I wonder if he’s including the money from the cash tree out back? Do I tell him about that or keep it a secret? I better ask Rahm.”

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to have a glass of wine. Before the government takes that away too, for my own good.

CafeMom

Hey everyone!

I started a weekly op-ed column over at CafeMom’s new site- The Stir.  Does this officially make me a mommy-blogger?  Do I have to attend BlogHer now? Hmm… things to ponder.  Actually, a couple of days in NYC this summer sounds great.  (My poor hubby is sitting at work on his lunch break reading that and getting worried.  Love you Honey! *mwah*)

While Leif tries to figure out if I’m seriously joking or jokingly serious about attending another conference, check out my first article.

A National Emergency

On Friday, President Obama declared Swine Flue, or H1N1, to be a national emergency.  Why?  Because of the “many millions” that have contracted the illness, more than one thousand have died from it.  Since we have no way of knowing exactly how many that “many millions” actually is, let’s say five million.  That means that 0.02% of the people that contract swine flu end up dying from it.  Maybe the number of swine flu cases is closer to ten million.  That would put the death rate from the disease at 0.01%.

That’s not exactly what I call a national emergency.  I believe the real pandemic is the fear created by the swine flu, and by our government’s overreaction to it.  The fear has been used it to push a “government knows best” agenda in places like New York, where legislation was in place to force health workers to receive the vaccination, or lose their jobs.  That mandate was only removed due to a lack of supply.

Side-note- President Obama assured America that there would be more than enough of the vaccinations to go around (120 million doses by mid-October), yet only about 13 million doses have come through.  So how are we supposed to believe promises by the government that our quality of care will not decrease under a public health option?

Another side-note- Since the vaccine is developed in chicken eggs, the demand for the economical protein source is bound to go up.  According to the laws of economics, the price of eggs will go up as the demand increases and the supply decreases.  Which means that many families that have already given up meat for eggs will have to go to beans and rice.

Let’s get back to that real pandemic- the fear mongering.  A nation preoccupied with a flu “emergency” is more likely to turn a blind eye to the real crises, like the war we’ll lose in Afganistan if we don’t send more troops like we did to win in Iraq, or the falling value of the dollar, or the cap and trade bill that will send energy costs skyrocketing, or the ongoing debate in congress over a $1,000,000,000,000 entitlement program, or the eminent bankruptcy of social security, or… well, you get my drift.

Now is not exactly the time to be declaring a disease with a 99.98% survival rating a national emergency.  As a country, we have bigger things to worry about.

Charles Rangel Needs To Go

Congressman Rangel is U.S. Representative from New York, and he serves as the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.  The Ways and Means Committee handles the financial matters of legislation.  That is to say- tax code.  All bills regarding taxation must go through the Ways and Means Committee before they go anywhere else in Congress.  To be on the committee is a pretty big deal, and to be the head of it is an even bigger deal.  Only seven of the 435 U.S. Representatives have offices in the actual Capital building, and the Chairman of the House and Means Committee is one of them (along with The Speaker, Majority and Minority Leaders and Whips, and the Appropriations Committee Chairman). The Ways and Means Committee has an incredibly wide influence, with legislation including welfare reform, Medicare prescription drug benefits, social security reform, tax cuts, and trade agreements (to name a few) going through it.  Needless to say, Charles Rangel is in a very powerful position to shape policy in our country.

So what kind of man is one of our most powerful legislators?  What kind of man is the one occupying the role in charge of introducing bills on financial matters to Congress, to be voted on by the House and Senate and signed into law by the President?  Bills that will affect the wallets of every American as various taxes are imposed?  What kind of man has such enormous power over the finances of America?

Charles Rangel is a serial tax cheat so corrupt he makes Tim Geitner look like a fourth grader caught cheating on a spelling test.

He failed to disclose income from multiple rental properties in New York and the Dominican Republic. He accepted considerable financial gifts, in violation of the House gift ban (say, isn’t that what Duke Cunningham is jail for?).  He kept numerous assets hidden.  He took bribes to cut taxes for companies that didn’t feel like paying them.  When confronted about half a million dollars found in two hidden accounts, he claimed that he forgot about them.

Why in the world is this man in charge of writing and/or introducing tax code to Congress?  Why would anyone want a tax cheat in charge of the committee that introduces legislation to raise your taxes?  What reason does he have to be mindful of the tax burden on Americans?  Of course he doesn’t care if taxes go up- he doesn’t pay them!

Obviously, this man needs to be removed from his position on the Ways and Means Committee, if not from the House of Representatives itself.  That’s a given, right?  Right?

Then why did The House vote today to keep him as the chairman of the Ways and Means committee?

The House voted 246-153 along mostly partisan lines to refer a GOP resolution to remove Rangel to the House ethics committee. The Democratic maneuver rendered the Republican effort meaningless, since Democratic leaders have said they have no intention of removing Rangel while the ethics committee is conducting a long-term investigation of his conduct.

I’m venturing a guess that all of those that voted not to have him removed from his position are hiding some unpaid taxes or other misdeeds themselves.  Why else would they not be outraged by Rangel’s outrageous behavior?

Chicago Reports on Olympics…or Not.

Over the weekend, a local news station in Chicago was ordered not to report…the news.  Chicago is making a bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.  Fox TV Chicago did a story covering the opposition to the games coming to Chicago.  As with any issue, there is more than one side.  So shouldn’t the news cover both sides?  Shouldn’t the news be objective to a situation, and simply report the facts?

I guess the only thing more biased than the main stream media these days is the main stream media in Chicago.

Now We’re Un-American

Last week, President Obama told those of us that disagree with his plans to take us into the dark age of medicine to get out of his way.

In an op-ed today, Speaker of the House Pelosi called those with dissenting opinions “Un-American.”

The leader of the free world is a bully, and the 3rd in line for that position is a name caller.  How did this happen?  Let’s hope that we don’t get to the point of wedgies and swirlies.

Shut Up & Sit Down?

Did President Obama really just tell people opposed to his socialist agenda to get out of the way?

“But I don’t want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess. I don’t mind cleaning up after them, but don’t do a lot of talking.”

Are you kidding me?  Isn’t this the same community organizer that said, “My job is not to represent Washington to you, but to represent you to Washington”?  And now he’s telling the 54% of Americans that oppose the health care plan (the one that he’s not even familiar with) to get out of his way?  How exactly is he following through on his commitment to represent us to Washington if he doesn’t even want to listen to what the majority of Americans have to say, let alone work with politicians on the other side of the aisle?

And how exactly is exponentially expanding the government entitlement programs that created the mess in the first place going to clean it up?  It’s like  trying to put out a fire by throwing gasoline on it.  Of course I’m going to organize with my community to stand in the way of politicians that want to tax me into bankruptcy so that the US can have a health care system as stellar as Great Britain’s, where 40% of cancer patients are never able to see an oncologist.

No Mr. President, I will not get out of your way.  I will do everything I can to stand up to you and protect the freedom, liberty, and equality of all Americans, according to my constitutional rights.  This is not a school play yard, and I will not be bullied into silence.

The Hospital Lies & a Baby Dies

I feel dizzy and sick from reading this article about a Brooklyn nurse  who was strong-armed into assisting with a late term abortion at the risk of losing her job.

Bosses told the weeping Cenzon-DeCarlo the patient was 22 weeks into her pregnancy and had preeclampsia, a condition marked by high blood pressure that can lead to seizures or death if left untreated.

The supervisor “claimed that the mother could die if [Cenzon-DeCarlo] did not assist in the abortion.”

But the nurse, the niece of a Filipino bishop, contends that the patient’s life was not in danger. She argued that the patient was not even on magnesium therapy, a common treatment for preeclampsia, and did not have problems indicating an emergency.

Her pleas were rejected, and instead she was threatened with career-ending charges of insubordination and patient abandonment, according to the lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Brooklyn federal court.

She stated:

“I emigrated to this country in the belief that here religious freedom is sacred,” Cenzon-DeCarlo said. “Doctors and nurses shouldn’t be forced to abandon their beliefs and participate in abortion in order to keep their jobs.”

Religious freedom only seems to be sacred these days as long it involves “dignified” sati.  I have to wonder, if the nurse was falsely led to believe this was a neccessary procedure to save the life of the mother, did the hospital lie to the mother as well, or did the hospital lie for the mother?  Either way, it’s simply unacceptable.

Galen Sherwin (the director of the New York Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Rights Project) said,

“The law provides protections for individuals who object to performing abortions, but at the same time, health-care professionals are not permitted to abandon patients.”

What about the baby? Who’s patient was the baby?  Why does a woman’s right to an abortion for any reason supersede a fully formed, tiny little person’s right to life? I can’t decide if that’s discrimination based on the age or the residency of the baby. Maybe both.

Another Corrupt Chicago Politician? You Don’t Say…

Notoriously corrupt Illinois politics got another notch in the scummy politician belt today. Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested this morning after allegedly attempting to sell the U. S. Senate seat that will be left vacant once Barack Obama is sworn in as the U. S. President.

Blagojevich was caught via wiretaps stating, “[the Senate seat]is a fucking valuable thing, you just don’t give it away for nothing.” He was also recorded saying that unless “I get something real good,” he would appoint himself to the vacancy. “I’m going to keep this Senate option for me a real possibility, you know, and therefore I can drive a hard bargain. You hear what I’m saying. And if I don’t get what I want and I’m not satisfied with it, then I’ll just take the Senate seat myself.” According to surreptitiously recorded conversations, Blagojevich spoke with associates about the possibility of trading the Senate post for either an ambassadorship or a Cabinet post.

Of course Obama responded to the situation with his predictable and expected, “I had no contact with the governor or his office and so I was not aware of what was happening…It’s a sad day for Illinois. Beyond that, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment.”

Interesting. Especially since less than a month ago, on November 23, top Obama advisor David Axelrod told Fox News in an interview, “I know he’s talked to the governor and there are a whole range of names many of which have surfaced, and I think he has a fondness for a lot of them.”

Axelrod responded to the revelation uncovered by conservative pundits with his predictable and expected, “I was mistaken when I told an interviewer last month that the President-elect has spoken directly to Governor Blagojevich about the Senate vacancy.” Obviously. *insert eye roll here*

It’s well known that Obama owes a lot of people a lot of favors. You don’t go from being a National Nobody to President within four years without a lot of help. I’m sure that Governor Blagojevich was one of those people. I don’t know whether whatever political boost he gave to Obama’s warp speed rise to the top was legit or corrupt, and frankly, at this point it probably doesn’t matter. But something was revealed today, if you were watching closely…Many of us have been watching and waiting to see how Obama would attempt to pay back those favors, or if he would even try. I think that we now have our answer. Attempt to call in your favor from the new Prez, and you will be sorry.

I am currently undecided on whether this makes me like Obama more or less.
